While you might think that the ornamental appearance of cast iron radiators makes them less practical, the opposite is actually true.
Trads Cast iron radiators are incredibly efficient, as the metal they are produced from is denser than the modern steel that is typically used in contemporary designs. This means that while they might take a little longer to heat up, they retain that heat for a much longer period of time. So, even after your central heating has been turned off, your cast iron radiator will continue to emit heat, allowing you to make the most out of the energy you use.
What’s more, a cast iron radiator tends to heat up the water inside to a higher temperature. As a result, when the water returns to your boiler, less energy is needed to reheat it.
In addition, the residual heat of your radiators can also mean they take less energy to get back up to temperature again later in the day. A steel radiator will get cold very quickly, meaning your boiler will need to work harder to heat it back up. If your cast iron radiator is still warm, less energy will be required to reach your desired temperature.
Overall, these benefits make it very efficient even for modern homes, as less heat is lost in the central heating system.

Compared to many of today’s modern steel radiators, they can give out more heat. Studies have shown that cast iron is more conductive, meaning more heat can be transferred into your room.

It is important to bear in mind the fact that these can be very heavy. When installing one, you need to be sure that the floor can properly support it, and that you can safely lift it - it usually requires at least 2 people to carry and fit a radiator.
So, exactly how heavy are they? Well, this depends on your exact radiator and how many columns and sections you choose. Naturally, the more columns and sections you have, the heavier it will be.
You should also remember that your radiator will be even heavier when filled with water. The bigger your radiator, the more water will be inside it, which adds significantly to the weight.
For example, 3 sections of our 2 column Victorian cast iron radiator weights 7.5kg when empty and 8.4kg when filled.
If you were to choose 4 sections of our 6 column Victorian cast iron radiator though, it would weigh 17.2kg when empty and 20kg when full.
Particularly large cast iron radiators can weigh over 100kg when filled, so always check how heavy yours is before you buy it.
To figure out what size cast iron radiator you need, you should start by working out the BTUs required for your chosen space. This is a calculation that figures out how much energy is needed to increase the temperature of your room. Once you know how many BTUs you need, you can choose the best size radiator.
