There are many factors to consider when selecting what type of radiator to install in your home. One of the first choices to make is whether you would prefer a convection or column radiator. Read on to explore the differences between them and find out why we would advise the column option.
In a convector radiator, hot water circulates through the main pipe, which heats the ‘fins’, resulting in a larger surface area to produce heat. These are the ‘standard’ radiators which are seen in the majority of homes throughout the UK.
A column radiator is different in that it does not require these ‘fins’, as, effectively, the entirety of these models does the job of a ‘fin’. Each column produces heat meaning that the whole surface area of the radiator is working to heat the space.

The larger surface area of column radiators allow them to heat a space very efficiently. Interestingly, convection radiators have a higher BTU output, however, due to being less efficient at circulating the heat around the room, are in fact not as effective as their Cast Iron counterparts.
