There are many factors to consider when selecting what type of radiator to install in your home. One of the first choices to make is whether you would prefer a convection or column radiator. Read on to explore the differences between them and find out why we would advise the column option.

What Is The Difference Between A Convector Radiator And Column Radiator

In a convector radiator, hot water circulates through the main pipe, which heats the ‘fins’, resulting in a larger surface area to produce heat. These are the ‘standard’ radiators which are seen in the majority of homes throughout the UK.

A column radiator is different in that it does not require these ‘fins’, as, effectively, the entirety of these models does the job of a ‘fin’. Each column produces heat meaning that the whole surface area of the radiator is working to heat the space.

What Makes A Column Radiator Superior?

Here at Trads, we believe that column radiators are superior to convector radiators. This is because of two main reasons, style and efficacy.

Style

We are incredibly proud of the wide range of styles that we offer. These can be broadly divided into three main groups, Victorian, Contemporary and Decorative. The models are based on original designs dating back to the 1800s.

Once you have chosen your model, you then need to decide on your colour and finish options, with over 10,000 to choose from we are sure that you can find the perfect fit for your home. Alternatively, should you already have the shade that you want decided upon, we also offer a colour match service!

Our Cast Iron Radiators can be a real statement piece in any room, they add style and sophistication, rather than being a simple necessity which goes ignored or is covered up.

Efficiency

The larger surface area of column radiators allow them to heat a space very efficiently. Interestingly, convection radiators have a higher BTU output, however, due to being less efficient at circulating the heat around the room, are in fact not as effective as their Cast Iron counterparts.

Furthermore, we manufacture your new radiator in our Lincolnshire-based factory, which allows us to ensure that only the highest calibre of Cast Iron is used. Using quality material results in better heat retention, meaning that your model will continue to heat the room long after the heating has been switched off. This is particularly welcome during the current energy crisis!
