Cleaning cast iron radiators can seem like a big job, however, it really doesn’t have to be too much of a chore. With spring just around the corner, we thought we would give you some valuable information on how to have your Trads rads looking their best.

Please note, the following applies to painted, NOT polished, models.

Why Clean Your Cast Iron Radiators?

Cleaning cast iron radiators may not seem like an important part of your housekeeping routine, but just like anything in your home, your radiators will accumulate dirt and dust over time. This dulls the finish, detracting from the beautiful statement piece that our radiators are designed to be. If you have chosen one of our more ornate models, grime can build up between the intricate detailing, reducing the impact of the artistry that goes into their manufacture.

Remember, cleaning cast iron radiators is not a weekly job, once or twice a year should be perfectly fine, or just as and when you feel they need it.

Cleaning Cast Iron Radiators - What You Will Need

  • Vacuum
  • Dust sheet/towel
  • Non-metal kitchen implement e.g. wooden spoon
  • Soft, lint-free cloth or sponge
  • Bucket of hot water
  • Washing up liquid
  • Soft, dry, lint free cloth/towel

Cleaning Cast Iron Radiators - Step-By-Step Guide

  1. Turn off your heating and allow time for the radiator to cool to a comfortable temperature.
  2. Vacuum to remove as much dirt and dust as possible. If your vacuum has a dusting brush attachment, this may be the perfect time to use it!
  3. Lay the dust sheet/towel underneath the radiator.
  4. Wrap the soft, lint-free cloth around the non-metal kitchen implement and run this between the columns to dislodge remaining dirt. Alternatively, you could use a large sponge.
  5. Add some washing up liquid to your bucket of hot water.
  6. Take the cloth/sponge, or find a fresh one if necessary, and dampen it. Use this to clean between the columns of the radiator, as though ‘flossing’.
  7. Wipe the radiator dry with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth or towel - this ensures rust is prevented.
  8. Pop the kettle on for a well-deserved cup of tea!

Following these simple instructions will make cleaning cast iron radiators a simple task, and will keep them looking their best. Please see our ‘How To’ video on the subject should you be unsure about any aspect of the process.
