Are you looking for an alternative form of heating? Many of our customers come to us seeking advice about which new technologies are appropriate to use with our radiators. Whether you are looking to reduce heating costs, or would prefer a more eco-friendly option, ground source heat pumps may be the ideal solution.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

How Do Ground Source Heat Pumps Work?

Ground source heat pumps work by installing piping underground at a depth which has a consistent, year-round temperature between 10 and 12 degrees celsius. Liquid is then sent through the pipes and into the building. Here, a compressor pump increases the temperature and this heated water is then sent to your radiators, water cylinders and underfloor heating. You can learn more here.

Are There Further Benefits?

Yes! As well as saving you money and being more eco-friendly, they last longer, require less maintenance and are safer than combustion-based heating systems!

Longevity

The average lifespan is typically around 15 years, but they can last up to 50. The ground heat exchanger element has been designed to last for over 100 years! There is no other heating system able to boast that longevity!

Maintenance

When properly installed, all that is needed is an annual check. This is very simple and you can do it yourself, rather than calling an engineer. Your original installer can give you details about the maintenance requirements and help you to optimise performance. As ground source heat pumps have fewer moving parts than typical heating systems, there is less chance of a breakdown occurring.

Safety

They rely on electricity rather than needing to burn fuel to generate heat, this means fewer safety concerns, including potentially fatal carbon monoxide leaks.

Ground source heat pumps even have government backing! They aim to have 600,000 heat pumps installed per year by 2028, in order to meet their net zero target!

If They Use Electricity, How Are They Cost Effective And Eco-Friendly?

Simply put, every unit of electricity that ground source heat pumps use will produce up to four times as much usable heat! That 400% efficiency increase minimises your carbon emissions and decreases your bills.

Optimising Your Central Heating

We recently published a blog full of tips and tricks to help you to keep warm this winter [LINK WHEN LIVE]. We would also add optimising your central heating with a ground source heat pump to this list.

However, before taking the plunge, you need to ensure that your heating system is fully compatible and our Cast Iron models all are, as well as our towel rails and bathroom radiators! The greater heat-emitting surface area of a column radiator makes them the perfect match. We use only the highest calibre of Cast Iron available, which means much higher heat retention due to its thermal mass.
